Week 9 Three Billboards

“What you need to become a detective is love, because through love comes calm, and through calm comes thought, and you need thought to detect things sometimes.”

Comments

  1. My interpretation is that often times, as humans, we miss small details because we are busy, scatter-brained, or stressed. Even when we are searching for something, as a detective does, we are too frenzied to find what we are looking for. This quote implies that in order to find what we are looking for, we first must find love. In turn, love brings about a calm and tranquil nature that translates to precise thoughts. Love has the power to make us harmonious with our thoughts. Rather than the turbulent thoughts like before, love embodies a sound mind and thoughtfulness that aids in finding things that were once overlooked.

  2. I interpret this quote as relating to the saying, "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer." The "enemies" don't have to be people, they can be concrete problems or abstract issues. Either way, the enemy, problem, or obstacle at hand requires love to solve or defeat. In order to solve a crime as a detective, one needs to love the criminal so that he may think like the criminal and retrace his steps. Loving a problem, enemy, or issue means devoting serious time and effort to it and showing it the attention necessary to best it.

  3. I interpret this quote as to mean that when we are filled with hate, we are unable to reason rationally. We cannot think through our ideas and actions because the hate overwhelms us. When we are filled with love, on the other hand, we can think rationally and detect the small things in life. We overlook a lot less when we are filled with love, rather than hate.

  4. I interpret this quote as to mean that when we as humans are filled with anger or hate we cannot think clearly. It is when we stop and take a second to calm down and step back from the situation is when we began to think clearly and are able to see the entire situation. I totally agree with the fact that love brings calm unto us as humans. However, I do not know if I fully support the fact that the calmness of love is where thought and problem-solving comes. Because sometimes I believe that we as humans become engulfed in love and then the love is all that we are able to think of. Therefore, love can sometimes be distracting also.

  5. I think this quote is more about being unbiased. When you are angry during a time in your life, you automatically hate everything and cannot think straight. This causes you to do impulsive things that you normally would not do. However, when you love you are calm. This allows you to also think straight and make normal decisions. Therefore, when you are mad, you are distracted. But if you can learn to love, you can clear your mind and make rational decisions.

  6. I think this quote means that for people to really notice things in life, they cannot be concerned about everything else and they should just learn to love the life they have. If you don't love the life that you have, it is hard to think clearly in an appreciative way

  7. I think this quote directly challenges what most people see as detective work. I would argue that it is commonly seen as making an enemy out of those who have wronged you. It does seem strange to think that this is how it is seen though, considering that hatred most likely leads to unfair and unjust treatment. If one approaches an issue with another person with love as an intention, it would make sense that this would lead to an overall smoother process.

  8. I think that this quote is trying to say when we are angry at others we don't think clearly and often act rationally. When we are filled with love we care about others and so we will think more about our actions towards them because we don't want to hurt them. It is saying that we must think through things but we can only do this with love

  9. I interpret this quote as saying that without love, your vision will be clouded with hate and irrational thoughts and you will not be as successful. Love is the foundation of being a successful person. This quote reminded me of something my mom used to say: "you can't learn to love someone else until you can learn to love yourself." To me, this has the same principle because you can't learn to be calm and connect with the world unless you are seeing it through eyes full of love.

  10. I interpret this quote as thinking or being logical comes through having compassion and affection. Without emotions like compassion, you cannot think clearly or thoroughly. And with thinking clearly, you can "detect" small things that can commonly be overlooked. In short, to think through things in life completely, one must know what love is first.
