Multimedia Argument Reflection

This is a counterpart to your Multimedia Argument project.

Write 200-250 words reflecting on the choices you made for your multimedia argument. What program did you use? What theme did you choose? What was the argument? What images did you choose and why? What sounds you choose, and rhythm patterns? Tempo (speed)? How will your argument affect your audience?

Comments

  1. For my Multimedia Argument Reflection, I used the program iMovie to complete my argument. Also, I used Soundation in order to create my music for my argument. This program allowed me to choose from a multitude of musical instruments and sounds and put them together in order to create a sound that would go along with my argument. I chose to keep the same argument as my researched video argument, which was that people should abstain from the vegan diet and also educate themselves on the effects that the vegan diet has on the human body. I decided to use all pictures of food for my video, with the first half of my video being picture of vegan foods and the second half consisting of foods that contain meat or dairy. For the sounds and rhythm that I used for this argument, I started the song off with a slow and very deep sounding beat that is meant to sound sad and undesired. Then right as the pictures switch from vegan foods to foods containing meat and dairy, the beat picks up a lot and has a higher pitched sound than the first half. This beat is meant to sound more upbeat and happy. Therefore, the argument that vegan foods are unsatisfactory and that foods that contain meats and dairy are desired and make people feel happier and more fulfilled than vegan foods. The pictures and sound work together to create a feeling that is pro-meat and dairy foods and against veganism. I would hope that the sad music during the pictures of vegan foods turns my audience members away from a vegan diet and that the upbeat sounds that are played cohesively with the foods that contain meat and dairy make them seem more satisfactory and desired by my audience.

  2. In my multimedia argument I used Soundation.com to compose my beat and premier pro to put it with pictures. The argument was the same as my last project. I chose to make it as a beat that was random at moments but still had the same underlying beats per minute. I wanted the beat to have a Sci-Fi feel to it because of my topic. I feel like when these high school kids are brought into big universities deception is very common and I wanted the beat to represent that. The part of the beat that goes off track and doesn't seem to flow is there to represent how the athletes feel with all of the pressure and attention on them. The tempo is high speed because that is how quickly this happens during one’s life, it is only a few years of being recruited and it impacts you forever because you are also choosing your education. The reason behind the clip art images is because they are easier to interpret in the big picture than specific real-world pictures that could be harder to relate. With clip art I hope that it easier to follow like a children’s book. My hope for the audience is that they get all of this and can understand it the same way that I do. I tried my best to let the pictures flow in a very general way that tells the story simply even if the topic isn’t known beforehand.

  3. For my multimedia argument, I used iMovie to compile the pictures and audio together. I used Soundation to create the audio for my multimedia argument. I chose to go with a theme that fit the mood of the food pictures, obesity epidemic and calorie information. The song starts with the sounds of people eating at a restaurant. The music then switches to a beat that is pretty upbeat but then becomes darker when the pictures begin to show obese people and fast food menus without calories. I kept the same argument from my research argument which was that all food selling establishments should be required to provide calorie information on their menus. I chose images that told a story. I started with picture of people going out to eat, menus without calorie information, fast food restaurants, and obese people, then I switched to a more positive story. This story showed families going out to eat, menus with calorie information, healthier meals, and healthy lifestyles. I chose these images to argue that if calorie information is posted, people will have more knowledge about what they could be eating and they will make healthier choices. I chose the sounds to match the pictures. I hope that the negative, darker sounds match the pictures of people eating fast food and making unhealthy choices while the more upbeat sounds match the pictures of people living a healthy lifestyle. I think that my argument would make some of my audience stop to consider the positive effect of having calorie information on restaurant menus and how this could lead to a healthier lifestyle.

  4. For my project, I used Premiere Pro and Lightroom and I still am having some trouble exporting from Lightroom. I used Soundation to create my soundtrack. The theme I chose reminds me of music that might be played a decision has to be made soon, or maybe when an important plan is being carried out. My argument was to lobby for the passage of a DACA-like act, therefore I chose images of people rallying for DACA, as well as pictures of children saying goodbye to their fathers as they’re being deported. I specifically chose the deportation pictures for an ethos effect, because there are some people who almost, but don’t, qualify for DACA that have been deported even though they have spent their entire lives here, and are forced to leave their family. included a picture of a man along with a picture of him being arrested, because he used to be protected under DACA until Trump got rid of it, which led to his deportation. The tempo for the music was 110 bpm, I chose the faster rhythms and sounds because I wanted it to sound like the fight for DACA is urgent and there needs to be action soon. Towards the end I used human voices and let the different sounds drop out one by one to try to create an eerie effect and leave people feeling uneasy, so they associate that feeling with not taking action. I hope this causes my audience to want to lobby for pro-DACA/immigration legislation.

  5. For my multi media argument, I used soundation and adobe premier pro. I tied to use flat in order to achieve a more acoustic sound, but soundation was easier to navigate for me. I chose to tell the story of girl growing up, and then being kidnapped and forced into sex slavery. And then at the end I show that if the US government made a strict federal policy against human trafficking, that the girl could have grown up and lived a happy successful life. To convey this message, I play happy gentle music, and show images in color of the young girl starting to grow up, then the music changes to more serious and dark and the colors are all black and white. Then I go back to happier music and replay the pictures of the girl growing up and end with the girl grown up as an adult. I tired to create a stark contrast with the images and music between how her life could be if she was, or wasn’t involved in human trafficking. My rhythm pattern and tone also change throughout he transisitions to emphasize the contrast as well.

  6. For my project, I used Lightroom and Soundnation to create my slideshow. I've been having a big issue with exporting my music file from Soundnation into an mp3 or a wav file. I've had to create three new songs because the file keeps getting corrupted in the process and I can't figure out how to get my original file back. The theme that I chose for the music was hype up sports music. Whenever I think of sports, I think of loud bass and fast dance music and something that will get the players hyped up to play in a game. I wanted there to be a build up for the beat because I wanted to mimic the adrenaline rush that you get when you play a sports game: kind of building at first and all of a sudden a huge rush. I wanted there to be lots of sounds and bass and chaos just like a sports game. The images I chose were political cartoons about whether or not people should pay college athletes as well as college athletes playing their sport. I wanted people to see just how passionate these athletes are when they play and allow the view to determine whether or not they see an amateur kid playing his game because he loves it or some kid who needs money in order to play and sustain life. This will affect my audience because it's allowing them to make their own decision as to what they believe these kids deserve, however, playing college athletics is an intense game and I wanted the song and the images to mimic that.

  7. For my project, I made the music in Soundnation but then I made the actual slideshow in premiere pro. The theme of the slideshow starts out happy to show how antibiotics can be very helpful but then switches to almost dangerous like theme showing how overusing antibiotics can cause harmful effects. My argument was that Americans should stop overusing antibiotics. I chose images of various types of antibiotics and what they should be used for. I also included images of what antibiotics should not be used for and some pictures of what happened to people who overused antibiotics. I chose these specific images to warn people about the dangers of overusing antibiotics and to show them what they should be used for. My sounds started our more happy, such as an upbeat guitar and some congas and then as it progressed I used more dreary and ominous sounds, such as a cello and low noises. the tempo is a medium/somewhat fast pace. This will affect my audience to show them consequences of overusing antibiotics.

  8. The only programs I used were Adobe premier and Adobe audition. The theme I used was somewhat of a sad chord progression that starts out slow and builds up with some layers. The argument was pretty much based off of pathos by showing problems that overusing antibiotics could cause. Many of the images I used were form my original research argument. I also found other images that had more emotional (sad) appeal to them as my research argument lacked these types of images. The sounds I used were mainly guitar with slight gain. I may add percussion in some way, however. The speed in the video starts out slow so the images remain on screen for a longer time. Over the course of a minute, the speed pick up and then slows down for the end. I decided to not use other sources (like an online percussion beat) because the tempo changes during the song. I think the change of speed adds a dramatic effect to the slideshow. It shows a sense of urgency. The antibiotics issue needs to be dealt with urgently so I think the build up of speed works.

  9. For my project, I used audition, premiere, and soundation. With these applications, I created a slideshow that juxtaposed two forms of debate. The first series of photos depicts individuals who seem to be in an angry discourse. This is used to represent my view on how debate occurs in todays society. To reflect this emotion, I used a fast paced beat and dramatic sounds to represent the pace of the debate. I purposely overlapped different instruments to create a lot of noise to represent the idea that one persons idea cannot be heard without interruption. The music ends with the same beat as the beginning, representing the idea that they were at the same place after the debate as they were at the beginning. The beat also resembles a fast paced heart beat, which is a physiological response to anger. The music is all in 120 bpm, common of pop music, to show that although futile, this form of debate is popular among the general poulation. The next series of photos show two individuals who are serious, yet respectful. To support this, I used music that was slower than the previous song. This gave a more relaxed vibe to the images on screen. The sounds alternate and have solos, which represent a respectful adherence to others opinions. The overlapping of sounds represent the major debate points. The difference of this in the first and the second song comes from the smoother flow of sounds in the second piece of music. The second song ends on a different note than it started, representing an idea actually getting across. This is how I view debate should be.

  10. I used Adobe Lightroom Classic and Soundation to make my multimedia argument. I made my song in Soudation, then imported the song into Lightroom where I had made my slideshow, where I combined the two. The song was somewhat upbeat, which I thought fit the topic of college athletics. However, I tried to make sure the song was not overly emotional, because my topic specifically talks about why college athletes should be paid, and has nothing to do with their performances. Often with sports, music can play a big role in triggering certain emotions to get fans or players excited for a game, so I tried to use a song that would keep viewers grounded emotionally, but also not boring them. I think this moderate tempo fits my argument. Often on sports networks, when discussing my issue, they will roll videos of college sports with background music while discussing the topic in the background. I tried to replicate this background music. I used various pictures of athletes competing on the field, and in practice, which to me showed the everyday commitment that college athletes put into their sport. I also chose pictures of players who have recently left the college sports world and moved to the pros, because I think it is also important to point out their pay difference in one year, even though their talent level is the same, and the time commitment is also the same.

  11. I used Adobe Premier Pro and Soundation to make my multimedia project. I first made the slideshow in Premier Pro and then exported the Soundation song I made, then integrated it into my Premier Pro project. The song has some classical notes in it, which I found relevant due to the nature of gun rights dating back to Revolutionary times. I also included some more somber notes to tie in the sadder images portrayed, such as Hitler and Sandy Hook. My main argument was that guns are a Constitutional right, one that is based off of our history of becoming an independent nation. That is why I used images of a Revolutionary battle, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and George Washington. However, as I progressed in my argument I chose to include the counter-argument that guns are bad. That explains the emotional images of Sandy Hook and Stoneman Douglas schools. This is also why I included some sadder musical pieces. I chose a slower tempo (90 bpm) because I feel that, since this is a historical and modern issue, the slower beat ties them together, opposed to a quicker beat like in modern music. I believe the argument will make the viewing audience consider both sides of the debate. One side saying guns are good and a right, the other saying they are bad and should be banned.

  12. For my Multimedia Argument Reflection, I used the programs soundation for my song, and I also used Premier Pro for my video. When I chose my them, I really wanted to keep it intriguing for my audience. I hoped that the viewers would be able to understand my point as to why the drinking age should be lowered, and could be persuaded without using any words to try and change their behaviors. My argument is Why the drinking age should be lowered. It all started mainly because the U.S. was bribed for highway infrastructure, and I find it illogical. A few of my favorite Images were Ronald Reagan enjoying a beer. I think this picture helps my argument out because Ronald Reagan is one of the main culprits as to why the drinking age is twenty-one, and in this image, he has a smirk on his face having a cold one with his wife. Another image I liked was McLovin’s fake ID from the 2007 hit comedy Superbad. This image is topical because whether the age is twenty-one or not, people are still going to find ways to get alcohol kind of like McLovin. I really stressed to make a new upbeat sound that was revolutionary, because if the drinking age were to be changed, it would be revolutionary for the U.S. I tried to use a punch/thump sound when the beat dropped for my drunk driving picture to stress the danger of driving under the influence. This was my favorite part of the project I really enjoyed making music for the first time. I showed all of my buddies my “masterpiece” and they all wanted to give it a try. My argument will affect the audience informing them the drinking age was lowered for a unreasoned purpose and that we would be almost better off if the legal limit were to be eighteen or nineteen years old.

  13. For my argument, I used soundation and premier pro. In all honesty, the song I made really fails to help the argument I am making. I was not very good at using the program and thought it would go along with my issue. Looking back on it, I should have used a song that fits the tone set with fighting. On the slideshow aspect, I started with Conor McGregor, the UFC's biggest star, to provide the main culprit of promoting the new owner's changes to the company. These changes are the movement from a honorable sport to a entertainment entity. After that, I chose to show the fighters that are great but not necessarily well-known. I think this is important to include them because they are the type of athletes that represent the sport so well. The pictures are a wide variety of action shots and just overall cool photos from various events. I wanted to prove that there is more to mixed martial arts than money. It is understandable for a company to want to make money, it does not give them the right to ruin something for people that train incredibly hard and put their health on the line. I made sure to put photos of Tyron Woodley and Demetrious Johnson celebrating because they get treated poorly but are the best at what they do and were the two fighters I quoted in my video. At the end, I put a picture of CM Punk getting choked out. I think it represents the problems with bringing in celebrities to a brutal sport like fighting. The pictures have to be the important feature in the slideshow due to my failure to make a strong beat for the background.

  14. The programs that I used were Soundation and Adobe Premier Pro. I used Soundation for making the music and Premier Pro for putting my slideshow together. I tried to make the music kind of similar in style to Grey's Anatomy's theme song because in the show, there are many instances where organ donation takes place. Whenever I think of music that goes along with hospitals, I think of that theme song and its techno-sci-fi sounds. The argument was that people who are eligible for organ donation should register. I chose images that illustrated the process of organ donation to give my viewers a visual on what takes place. I also used pictures that made the audience feel sympathy so they will be persuaded to take action. For the music, I chose a faster tempo because organ transplantation is not a slow process and require immediate action. Also, in the medical world I feel that everything is face pace so having a faster tempo makes more sense. My argument should affect my audience by giving them the motivation to register if they are eligible for donation. The visual aids with the music behind hopefully will give them a better understanding of what organ donation is and what they can do to help.

  15. For my multimedia argument I used soundation, Lightroom and Premiere Pro to make my project. I used soundation because I have no experience with making my own music so it sounded better when I used pre recorded beats than when I tried to start my own music from scratch. I made my slideshow on Lightroom so that pictures would flow nice and the slide show was in the order that I wanted it in. I combined my audio and slideshow on Premiere Pro. I chose to use an upbeat and lively theme to go with the excitement of sports. I kept my argument the same that all children should be involved in at least one sport. I chose images that showed kids enjoying sports and I also showed images of the benefits of sports such as improved brain activity, teamwork and better academic ability. I also showed cons of not playing sports such as being too sedentary and being more likely to be obese. I chose to use fast paced and electronic sounds with a little bit of electric guitar. I Felt like when I combined all of these sounds the audio sounded like the type of music that gives the listener an adrenaline rush. This is what I wanted because this is usually the type of music that one associates with sports. This will affect my audience by making them feel motivated to get their kids into youth sports because of the adrenaline rush they feel and the pictures they’re seeing.

  16. For my multimedia argument I used Soundation, Premiere Pro, and Paint to make my slide show. I chose to use Soundation because honestly I was just messing around with the premade instrument styles and I found a style that fit perfectly with what I wanted to argue. I used Premiere Pro to put the images and music together because I was not very used to Lightroom so I did all the steps on Premiere Pro. Finally I used Paint as a way to edit the images to the right sizes before I put them into Premiere Pro. My theme for the music was a kind of Eastern style that fit with my argument. My argument was to fight against capitalism, which contradicted my video argument that fought for capitalism. This slideshow argues for more eastern styles of government including communism and socialism. I chose images that showed corruption with capitalism. This includes singular people in charge of large sections of money and huge populations with much less control and money. There are also pictures describing how life is a gamble in capitalism and how people are essentially all alone since everyone is fighting for themselves. This is to show how bad capitalism is. Halfway through the slideshow I started putting pictures of happy people in communistic governments and photos of symbols representing communism and socialism to show how great they are. I chose eastern sounds that were slightly upbeat at 90 beats per minute with alternating fast and slow instruments. I believe my argument will make the audience see that capitalism encourages singular people owning the rest while they struggle and that other government styles are much better.

  17. I chose to use Premiere Pro and GarageBand to create my multi-media project. I made my song on GarageBang simply because I had used it for school projects in the past and was somewhat familiar with the software. My video was made through Premiere Pro, mainly because I just used the platform to create my research argument project and knew I could make a solid video with it. My theme for the music was fairly sad with a lot of slow synths and bass. I thought this beat would go well with my argument about why rooting for DC sports teams is a brutal lifestyle choice. I chose this argument after the Penguins beat the Capitals in the first game of their second round, game of seven series. I was pretty angry because we blew a 2-0 lead in the third period and wanted to express my frustration in this project. The pictures I chose consisted of sad Washington sports fans and players. I thought the audience seeing how sad these teams can get their fanbase would add to the overall argument of why no one should follow DC sports teams. One aspect of my audio that gave me some trouble was choosing to put drums in or not. Since I wanted the audio to be somewhat sad and slow, I thought putting in a drum beat would make it too upbeat. However, I decided to put a quiet and slow drum line at the end of the video which I believe improves the music and does not take away from the mood.

  18. I used Adobe PremierePro to compile my multimedia argument because I already had experience with it and I like the extensive editing and tweaking options. To compose the music, I used Flat, because I thought it had a more user-friendly interface. My argument was in agreement with my previous video argument, which was that US legislators should abolish the death penalty. Given this, I chose a solemn and dark theme. To maintain a serious atmosphere, I kept the tempo at 80bpm, a bit on the slow side. I chose drums, choir, and various string instruments to make my music dramatic. I have a main strings melody which repeats throughout the track; repetition strengthens an argument. The choir voices harmonize with the strings intermittently. I aimed for a movie soundtrack-like sound with my drum beat and used the drums to build tension. The video started with sinister images of prisons to gain attention. The images slowly transitioned into more provocative ones of protests and demonstrations in favor of death penalty abolition. I edited my images such that they were black and white with the exception of red--I wanted red to show severity, and life and death simultaneously.
